Why Does My Back Hurt When I Wake Up? Wausau Chiropractor Explains

Waking up with back pain is one of the most common complaints we see in our office here in Wausau.

Most people assume it’s their mattress. Some blame their age. Others try to stretch it out and hope it goes away.

But here’s the truth: Morning back pain usually has a very specific cause, and it’s often fixable faster than you think.

Let’s break it down.

The Real Reason Your Back Hurts in the Morning

When you sleep, your body is in one position for hours at a time. That means any small issue can build up overnight and show up the second you get out of bed.

The most common causes we see in central Wisconsin patients are:

1. Stiff joints that aren’t moving well

If your spine isn’t moving properly, it stiffens overnight. When you stand up, those joints suddenly have to move again, which creates pain.

2. Weak or deconditioned muscles

If your core and back muscles aren’t doing their job, your joints take the load. Overnight, that stress builds up.

3. Poor sleep positions

Sleeping twisted, on your stomach, or without proper support can put your spine in a bad position for 6 to 8 hours straight.

4. Old injuries that never fully healed

That “tweak” from months ago might still be lingering under the surface.

Is It Your Mattress?

Sometimes. But not as often as people think.

A bad mattress can contribute, but if your back hurts:

  • in the morning

  • AND after sitting

  • AND after certain movements

…it’s probably not just your bed.

Replacing your mattress without fixing the underlying problem usually doesn’t solve it.

What Should Normal Feel Like?

You should be able to:

  • Get out of bed without pain

  • Stand up straight right away

  • Move normally within a few minutes

If it takes 30–60 minutes to “loosen up,” that’s a sign something isn’t working the way it should.

What Actually Fixes Morning Back Pain?

This is where most people go wrong.

They try:

  • Stretching randomly

  • Resting more

  • Avoiding movement

Those might feel good temporarily, but they don’t fix the cause.

What actually works is:

1. Restoring joint motion

If a joint isn’t moving, it needs to be addressed directly.

2. Loading the area the right way

Your body needs strength, not just stretching.

3. Teaching your body how to handle stress again

So the pain doesn’t come back.

In our office, this usually includes a combination of hands-on treatment, targeted rehab, and simple at-home strategies.

How Fast Can This Improve?

Most people notice a difference quickly.

In fact, we expect many patients to feel a noticeable improvement during/after their first visit.

Not perfect. But better.

If you’re not seeing progress early, something is being missed.

When Should You Get It Checked Out?

You don’t need to wait months.

If:

  • Your back hurts most mornings

  • It’s been going on more than 1–2 weeks

  • You feel stiff or limited getting out of bed

…it’s worth getting it looked at.

The Goal Isn’t Endless Appointments

Our goal is simple: Get you feeling better quickly and show you exactly what to do so it stays that way.

You shouldn’t need 12, 15, or 20 visits just to start feeling better.

You should understand your problem and how to manage it.

FAQs About Morning Back Pain

Why is my back worse in the morning but better later in the day?

Because movement helps. Once you start moving, your joints and muscles warm up and function better.

Should I stretch first thing in the morning?

Light movement is better than aggressive stretching. The wrong stretch can actually make things worse.

Do I need imaging like an X-ray or MRI?

Not in most cases. Most back pain can be evaluated and treated effectively without imaging.

Is this normal as I get older?

Common? Yes. Normal? No. You shouldn’t have to live with it.
